.s. energy. this oil and gas revolution we have been through in the last few years is fantastic. it's lowering our need to import oil. that money stays in our economy. when we produce a barrel of oil or natural gas in this country we get 80 to 90% of the benefit. if we have to import energy, it's about a dime. so, it has a multiplier effect on our economy. second, we need to reform our corporate tax code. it's unfair. it's not productive. most importantly, it dissuades capital investment. capital ininvestment is almost perfectly correlated with job creation. >> bret: it seems every year we talk about tax reform. >> what has happened is other countries have a much more simple and competitive corporate tax rate. we are the highest now of all the industrialized country. the tax rate at corporate level determined the level of capital expenditures. the top 1,000 companies in the united states account for 60% of all of the capital. the computer, planes, trucks, factories, the machines, things that put people to work. we don't see why the corporate tax rate could not be changed. >> bret: y

that pope benedict stepped down was because of his age. he said he didn't have the energy anymore. and so i think there was a sort of understanding among a lot of people that maybe the cardinals of the conclave would go for someone who was younger and seemed, perhaps, as more vital. having said that, remember, the two things that i think people were looking for most were someone who could evangelize and someone who could clean up the bureaucracy of the vatican. certainly on the first one we've talked about his great evangeliization skills. thomas reese was right. we've seen growth in the church in africa and latin america. there's also competition from protestant evangiliization. it's going to be interesting to see what this man who lives so simply does inside the vatican. certainly father or george could speak better to this than i could. but what will happen now inside the walls of the vatican behind me. because there's no doubt it is widely known that they need to get their house in order, so to speak, martin. >> going to father bartunek for a moment, i want to mention a poll that was do

'm wondering if the sequester cuts will damage that. and there was an op ed from the department of energy's national laboratories. it was titled, the sequester is going to devastate u.s. science research for decades. they said this drop in funding will force to us cancel all new programs and research initiatives, probably for at least two years. is that going to put a damper on our future prospects? >> if the sequester holds in its current form for the ten years that it is supposed to, then yes, the answer is there will definitely be horrible consequences. i think before we go to the bad news, you need to give a little context. the good news is that america has been investing in research and development. it has been investing in science and technology at a very high rate. in 2009, thanks partly to the stimulus, the u.s. investment matched the previous high at the space race at 2.9 of gdp. that amount of money being poured into public and private research. so we've come down a little because of the budget cuts already put in place and we've come down much more because of the sequester. tha
